Polycarbonate (PC) and acrylic (PMMA) are transparent, lightweight plastic materials. Using them in elevator walls, instead of heavy glass, improves the energy efficiency of an elevator. Building lighter elevators reduces their energy needs. Polycarbonate and acrylic weigh about half the weight of glass, which has a significant impact on the energy consumption. At the same, time they are extremely durable materials. PMMA is 20 times and PC is 200 times more impact resistant than glass, so they have a long service life.

Polycarbonate is a particularly useful raw material when impact resistance and transparency are required. It is a suitable material for lighting applications of elevators. Physical properties of PC can be significantly improved with hard coating. Aikon® PC Hard, hardcoated polycarbonate, has an excellent abrasion and UV-resistance. It is a suitable material for example for automated doors. Aikon® PC Hard is also an excellent glazing material for private and public premises at risk of vandalism.
Aikon® PMMA Hard is acrylic material whose physical properties are significantly improved with hard coating, and hard coated acrylic is an extremely scratch resistant material. Therefore Aikon® PMMA Hard is a superior material to elevator or escalator walls. PMMA can also be used for display boards to replace glass, but it is also a suitable material for lighting applications of elevators. Being highly weather‑resistant, acrylic is also well suited to outdoor applications.
Escalators, elevators, or automated doors in public premises are in heavy use and, therefore, they require high wear resistance of the materials. We recommend using hard coated plastic materials for this purpose. Hard coating significantly improves scratch resistance of polycarbonate and acrylic, and, thereby, takes the materials to the next level.
Space has an essential role in elevators. Integrating smart technologies to elevator walls or doors can increase passengers' feeling of space. Our laminating technologies enable the embedding of shading films or info displays to laminated polycarbonate or acrylic sheets. The smart technologies are easy to use.
